Objective of role  

The Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) Social Worker is responsible for undertaking Mental Health Act assessments and associated statutory work across the London Boroughs of Richmond and Wandsworth, maintaining consistently high standards of professional practice and delivery service.

This is a key statutory role, working at a high level of professional autonomy and complexity to ensure individuals experience timely, lawful, and person‑centred interventions.

About the role 

We are seeking experienced and committed Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHP) to join our dedicated daytime AMHP Team covering the boroughs of Richmond and Wandsworth.   

You will deliver high‑quality AMHP practice in accordance with relevant legislation and guidance, working collaboratively with partner agencies to safeguard and promote the wellbeing, rights, and choices of service users.

Key Responsibilities 

• To deliver a high‑quality AMHP service in line with the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended), Mental Capacity Act 2005, Care Act 2014, Children Act 1989, and Council policies.
• To undertake and support the social supervision of conditionally discharged patients when required.
• To work in accordance with AMHP Regulations 2008 and maintain professional competence and registration requirements.
• To manage complex and high‑risk assessments, maintaining excellent professional standards consistent with national codes of conduct (e.g. Social Work England).
• To participate in relevant training, AMHP Forums, and Reflective Practice Groups, and support the development of AMHP trainees.
• To promote service user choice, empowerment, independence, and personalisation throughout assessment and decision‑making processes.
• To undertake statutory safeguarding interventions in line with inter‑agency adult safeguarding policies and procedures.
• Contribute to the ongoing development of services, policies, procedures, and good practice within the department.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records, ensuring appropriate information sharing in line with data protection requirements.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• AMHP qualified
• Experience working as an approved AMHP within the last 5 years
• Maintained the AMHP regulations annual training requirements   
• Social work qualification 
• Social Work England registration 
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage time, use supervision effectively and work confidently in complex situations
